Message from the President:
For nearly 50 years, the New York Citizens Committee on Aging has been considered an innovative leader in aging policy and advocacy. One of our strengths is our unique mission to educate and inform public policy on aging issues as an independent and non-partisan organization which does not serve any particular area of concern or constituency. Our membership is comprised of a diverse group of older and younger City residents, as well as representatives of the nonprofit, government, business, labor, civic and academic communities. This broad spectrum in our membership fosters dialogue between disparate parties that have one common area of interest, the well-being of the aging community.
With help from the Isaac H. Tuttle Fund, the New York Citizens Committee on Aging is pleased to report that we have successfully achieved many of the goals and objectives that we set for 2008. The Committee has continued to educate the community on topics of vital concern to the aging network, and has brought seniors, advocates, government entities, service providers, and concerned citizens together to foster collaboration on behalf of older New Yorkers.
Our Initiative to Reduce Elder Poverty in New York City has ignited great interest in the aging community. The rising costs of fuel, food and other necessities of life have had a direct negative impact on the quality of life for many older New Yorkers. Especially now, with the current economic uncertainties that we all face, elder poverty has become a matter of urgency. The New York Citizens Committee on Aging was able to respond to this crisis by organizing partnerships and workgroups in collaboration with other agencies to explore solutions and by informing policy makers of the magnitude and seriousness of this problem. These collaborations have been fruitful in yielding recommendations and in identifying solutions that are realistic and have a chance to successfully improve the quality of life for the most impoverished of New York Citys aging community.
We invite you to explore our website and learn more about our mission to ensure that the lives of older people are protected and enhanced.
