Under the Radar: Old and Poor in a City of Riches, a solutions-oriented forum was held on May 11th 2007 in order to present the Committee’s findings on elder poverty in New York City and solicit realistic and specific solutions. The Forum, attended by nearly 200 participants, featured a keynote presentation by State Senator Liz Krueger, a panel of experts, and time for audience members to put forth their ideas for change.

After the Forum, a small ad hoc workgroup was assembled to analyze the recommendations that emerged and determine where the Committee should direct its attention in order to make the greatest impact. As a result, the Committee’s Initiative to Reduce Elder Poverty has focused its efforts on four key issues affecting the City’s older population. They include:

  1. Providing income security and employment opportunities;
  2. Strengthening the existing social safety-net to prevent individuals from descending into poverty;
  3. Expanding affordable housing options and supports; and,
  4. Reducing the financial burden often associated with serious health conditions and/or disability.

A final briefing report, containing our recommendations, and based on meetings and input from other organizations, is now being drafted for publication.
