WOMEN AND AGING: ISSUES FOR LIFE

The Economics of Aging as It Impacts Women was the focus of the citywide WOMEN AND AGING: ISSUES FOR LIFE conference sponsored by the New York Citizens' Committee on Aging.
Held on November 13th 2002 at the 1199 / SEIU Cherkasky-Davis Conference Center in New York City, the conference drew a standing room only audience of nearly 200 people who represented diverse local, city-wide, state-wide and international organizations, agencies and institutions.
The keynote address, delivered by Professor Alicia Munnell, discussed issues of income security, inequalities and inadequacies; gender issues of Social Security, SSI; and the financing of pension programs. Dr. Munnell is the Peter F. Drucker Chair in Management Sciences at the Boston College Carroll School of Management and Director of Boston College's Center for Retirement Research. She served on the President's Council of Economic Advisors, was Assistant Secretary for the US Treasury for Economic Policy, and Senior Vice President and Director of Research with the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston .
Following the keynote presentation, a panel responded from the perspectives of practical issues of income security, the economics of women's access to health care, and industry's response to the needs of women in today's workforce.
Moderated by Dr. Jeanette Takamura, Dean of the Columbia University School of Social Work and Former Assistant Secretary for Aging , US Dept. of Health and Human Services, respondents included:
- Lou Glasse Chair, Task Force on Women, Gerontological Society of America; President Emerita, OWL; and Former Director, New York State Office for the Aging. (Practical Women's Issues of Income Security and Inequality)
- Carol Raphael, President and Chief Executive Officer, Visiting Nurse Service of New York (The Economics of Women's Access to Health Care)
- Claire Fleming, MSW, CAC, CEAP Director, New York University Faculty & Staff Assistance Program; Past President of the NYC Chapter, Employee Assistance Professionals Association (Industry's Response to the Needs of Women in Today's Workforce).
The closing Round-Table explored the impact of politics on the economics of women as it affects women.
Moderated by William J. Arnone, Partner, Ernst & Young LLP; Executive Committee, Employee Benefit Research Institute and Founding Member of the National Academy of Social Insurance, the Round-Table participants examined, evaluated and recommended federal, state and local policy options to support a sound economic future for women.
